Why This Blog Exists & Where We’re Going
There’s something special about Illinois that doesn’t always make the headlines. Something that people aren’t talking about as often as they should.
It’s found in the quiet main streets, the family-owned shops, the coffee poured by someone who knows your name, and the makers who pour their hearts into what they create. It’s in the places you pass on road trips and think, “We should stop here sometime.”
That’s where Eat Shop Explore Illinois was born.
This project started as a simple love for supporting local. A way to bring more attention to the small businesses that make our communities. Over time, it grew into something much bigger; a storytelling platform dedicated to highlighting the people, places, and experiences that make our small towns thrive.
More Than a Directory
Eat Shop Explore Illinois isn’t just about listings or promotions. It’s about stories.
Behind every shop is a person who took a risk. Behind every café is a dream. Behind every small town is a community doing its best to keep local alive.
In 2025 alone, we met and interviewed over 150 small businesses, traveled across the state, and reached millions of people who want to support local but don’t always know where to start.
This blog is where those stories get to live a little longer.

Looking Ahead
As we head into 2026, Eat Shop Explore Illinois is expanding as much as we can with more travel, more features, more ways to support small businesses and creators across the state.
This blog is an invitation to slow down, explore intentionally and to support the places that make Illinois feel like home. By supporting local we ensure our dollars stay where they belong.
Thank you for being here. Let’s eat local, shop small, and explore Illinois together.
